Role:

A Vehicle Gauging Engineer is required to provide specialist support to UK rolling stock projects, bids, platform development and R&D activities. In this role you will be responsible for designing and delivering vehicles that are:

• Compatible with the UK railway infrastructure / environment, and;

• Demonstrably compliant with contractual and legal requirements.

You will ensure that gauging is managed through the design and validation of the product to achieve acceptance by the customer through technical assessment and working with suppliers, customers and regulatory authorities.

As a Vehicle Gauging Engineer, you will work as part of a small team of specialist engineers engaged with the disciplines of: Acoustics; Mass Properties; Gauging and Aero/thermodynamics. As you will be working alongside experienced Gauging engineers development could be given in the role, hence this is also an opportunity for the right candidate to develop skills in Rail Vehicle Gauging.

Key Responsibilities and Challenges:

• Responsible for the design of vehicles for gauge compliance and compatibility with the network, ensuring vehicles are optimised for performance, capacity and passenger interfaces.

• Development of vehicle requirements for gauging based on contractual and tender documentation, the company’s legal obligations and the company’s policies and procedures.

• Determine and develop vehicle concepts for complying with the vehicle requirements.

• Carry out and coordinate vehicle gauging calculations using specialist software.

• Liaison with system engineers and suppliers to determine and develop system concepts to ensure that the vehicle meets its requirements.

• Production of vehicle compliance and compatibility evidence and reports for gauging.

• Providing specialist gauging support to the Engineering department and project teams.

Qualifications

Qualifications: Degree or equivalent in an engineering or science discipline.

You should have an understanding of the (generic) engineering design process, with excellent written and verbal communication skills.

We are looking for a talented, ambitious and enthusiastic person to join a highly skilled team. Your team player attitude, ability to make decisions and solve problems, as well planning, organizing and prioritizing work will be highly appreciated.

It would be an advantage if you are familiar with:

• CAD software;

• Dynamics modelling tools (e.g. Vampire & Simpack);

• Specialist Gauging softwares (e.g. CleaRouteTM or PhXTM).

Computer Skills: Experienced user of standard MS Office applications including Microsoft Word and Excel at an Intermediate/Advanced level.

We would also appreciate (but do not request as mandatory) if you have specialist knowledge of:

• the Network Rail Route Acceptance Process;

• Railway legislation;

• Applicable rolling stock standards and;

• Gauging & Dynamics techniques and processes.
