UK Graduates 2018 Program - Graduate Trainee Engineering, Product Safety and Reliability-TEMA-UKDY01503363

Description

Bombardier Transportation is a global engineering company that’s shaping the evolution of mobility. We have a rich heritage behind us, but it’s our innovative approach that puts us at the forefront of our industry. At the heart of everything are our employees and our suppliers, with whom mobility truly begins. Join us at our major site in Derby and take pride in working on quality, leading-edge projects that drive your career forward.

What is the Safety and Reliability team responsible for?

The responsibilities of the Safety and Reliability (S&R) team begin at the bid phase of a project. The S&R engineers communicate with vehicle and system engineers to understand more about the proposed design of the train. From this, the engineers calculate the reliability for each system that is to be used on the train, with the goal of identifying its overall reliability performance. Through analysis of agreements made with the customer, the engineers then decide on and justify the level of reliability compliance that Bombardier will commit to and deliver. The S&R engineers are also responsible for producing the proposed reliability growth curves, expected penalties and predicted performance regime over the lifetime of the train.

As the project progresses, S&R engineers also work with system suppliers to put constraints on safety and reliability performance, and analyse and construct the fault trees that arise from each system or component. Furthermore, the engineers manage and approve the responses from suppliers and perform cost/benefit analyses to justify if and when a design change is required. The engineers also analyse the performance of all current fleets and identify trends in failures in order to identify possible root causes; performing techniques such as FMEAs and FMECAs, and using fault tree diagrams that have been designed for each train.

Ultimately, S&R engineers will have to produce documentation and supporting fault analyses to justify the reliability and safety performance of the realised design. In addition to being approved by the Customer, the safety justification will have to be approved by statutory safety approval authorities to permit train operation.

The S&R team is also responsible for managing risk and analysing all safety incidents that occur to Bombardier fleets out in service. This is achieved by identifying the root cause and compiling a report to either justify why this is a one-off situation or to outline the further actions required, ensuring that the fleet is fit to remain in service. The engineers then follow this process through to final sign-off. Also, the engineers are responsible for reviewing and signing off all modifications to confirm that they are appropriate, safe to carry out and will not lead to any new, and potentially more dangerous, failures.

What type of work/projects am I likely to get involved in as a Safety and Reliability Graduate?

Bid phase work with the reliability engineers on upcoming projects. Working with suppliers to ensure required safety and reliability performance is delivered. Supporting the performance of existing fleets, including analysis of current data, and performing safety analysis and reviews on modifications and incident reports. Managing safety of fleets in service, including incident investigation, hazard analysis and risk assessment.

With an experienced Mentor to guide you and undertaking a variety of training modules, you will work towards gaining a professional qualification while also building both technical and interpersonal skills.

The Engineering scheme is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and we support your progression to Chartered Engineer.

Qualifications

You will need a minimum 2:1 Bachelors Degree or Masters Degree in a Railway Risk and Safety discipline, or an Engineering degree doubled by an interest in safety. Candidates must have excellent problem solving skills and a passion for making things happen.
