Purpose of the role
The Inter-Urban Fleet Maintenance Engineering Manager will be an integral part of the Project Core Team for the existing rail vehicle maintenance operations on the Class 22x DEMU fleets, which operate on the Arriva Cross Country, Avanti West Coast and East Midlands Railway networks. The Inter-Urban Fleet Maintenance Engineering Manager will also be required to work closely with Bombardier’s fleet mobilisation teams to support the introduction to service of the new Class 730 Aventra EMU rail vehicles on to the West Midlands Railway network and form part of the Project Core Team for the subsequent ongoing fleet maintenance operations.

The position will report to the Head of UK Fleet Maintenance Engineering and will comprise leading a team of multi-disciplined engineers across several operations sites, located in the Burton-on-Trent, Derby, Birmingham and Milton Keynes areas of the UK. The role also includes the requirement to undertake out of hours duties as part of an on-call roster.

Responsibilities:

People Management, Engagement & Leadership
• Ensure that the team is resourced and organised to deliver the key business objectives.
• Develop engineering organisational capability using all HR available processes, procedures and tools including: Recruitment, Competence Management, Performance Management, Development Plans, Talent Management, Succession Planning.
• Responsible for the employee engagement of the team and delivering action plans that make a more effective and transparent workplace.
• Develop effective interfaces and governance with (internal and external) supplier functions critical to supporting business objectives delivery.
• Principal interface with customers for project level engineering activities and governance.

Delivering Engineering Solutions
• Ensure that the specified fleet maintenance regime is available, certificated, adhered to and complies with all relevant legislation.
• Manage relevant ECM (Entity in Charge of Maintenance) responsibilities on applicable fleets.
• Manage product safety and associated activities, including containments/countermeasures, risk assessments, governance, project delivery and reporting.
• Ensure depot operations teams are fully supported to resolve arising fleet technical issues, providing fitness to run decisions where required.
• Engineering change management in accordance with company/customer processes and industry requirements.
• Identification and delivery of fleet reliability/availability improvements.
• Preparation and readiness for fleet overhaul activities and fleet improvement campaigns.

Business Performance Improvements
• Identify, develop and deliver opportunities to reduce the cost of fleet maintenance/operation and mitigate arising business risks.
• Identify, develop and deliver opportunities to increase project revenue through customer variation orders and supporting bids for new contracts.
• Manage the engineering team budget.
• Utilisation of emerging technology to improve efficiency and effectiveness of operational activities.
• Maximise improvement opportunities across fleets via stardardisation and best practice sharing.

Qualifications

Experience & Qualifications
• Previous management experience in relevant similar roles involving the maintenance and overhaul of safety critical systems/equipment in a rail operational environment.
• Experience in developing and managing technical teams across multiple locations.
• Proven track record in delivering engineering change solutions to improve fleet safety, performance and cost-effectiveness.
• Demonstrable project management experience with multiple (internal and external) stakeholders.
• Experience of delivering engineering activities associated with new train fleet introduction would be advantageous.
• Strong engineering/technical knowledge of rail vehicle traction and rolling stock systems and maintenance policies/practices.
• Thorough knowledge of rail industry legislation, safety case obligations and change management/approvals.
• Educated to Degree or Higher Certificate in engineering/technical discipline.
• Chartered status or actively working toward chartered status

Knowledge of the Business & Industry
• Prior knowledge and experience of the rail industry and of its trends, with specific reference to train maintenance and operations.
• Knowledge of the UK market (train operators and competitors).
• Understanding of how sub-functions integrate into the train maintenance value chain.

• Frequent travel across the UK (estimated 50% of the time in Central Rivers, with the remainder split across other sites: Derby, Birmingham, Milton Keynes)
