We are currently looking to recruit a Mechanical Systems Engineer (m/f) for our site in Derby, United Kingdom


The Mechanical Systems Engineer will be part of a team that provides full lifecycle mechanical systems engineering for new Passenger rail vehicles. Typical systems for which the department take design authority: Bogies, Doors, Gangways, Couplers, Pantographs, Shoe-gear and Glazing systems. The team supports other functions with systems integration including Bogies and Propulsion business units. The team also specializes in: troubleshooting for other departments, movements’ assessment, space envelope optimization, gauging assessments, corrosion protection, and installation design along with reliability growth initiatives.

To deliver these solutions the candidate will need to occasionally visit suppliers, customers, rail depots and for some work packages international engineering sites.

Your Tasks

- Ensure designs are compliant to customer and legislative requirements, including design review, design assurance statements, system testing, first article inspections, clause by clause responses to requirements

- Manage technical response from system suppliers, via Technical requirements documentation, interface documentation, deliverables lists, type testing, manuals, strategic development, building relations

- Assist our sub-suppliers in the design process. Use experience to offer design solutions and where a practical solution cannot be found revisit requirements and find compromise for all stakeholders

- Plan their own workload and deliver it on-time and to the right quality

- Acts as an example and a supporter of best practices, lessons learnt and encourages feedback and development of mechanical systems team as a whole


As our ideal candidate, you will have the following qualifications and attributes:

- Mechanical Engineering Degree and/or Rolling Stock Design Knowledge (preferably a Chartered Engineer or in the process of becoming Chartered)

- Strong communicator and negotiator
- Ability to review, assess and endorse mechanical designs
- Develop strategies for problem solving and a creative input to design solutions.
- Solicit customer requirements and transform them into solutions with our suppliers.
- Leadership of design reviews and demonstrate good engineering judgment
- Champion System Engineering best practice
- Proactive approach to solve unplanned or conflicting issues
- Plan their own workload and deliver it on-time and to the right quality.
- Delegated authority from the Mechanical Systems WPO
- Willingness to develop a specialization in one or more of the systems detailed above.
- Technical specifications and report authoring.
