What are your contributions to the team?
- Adhere to General Work Requirements.
- Perform conventional (manual) machining operations, such as using manual mills, lathes, and drill presses to fabricate or modify parts as required.
- Perform various TIG and MIG welding processes to assemble and weld steel, stainless steel, and aluminum parts; assist with inconel and titanium.
- Hand-fit, hand-form, and/or layout parts as required; clean detailed parts and set up welding equipment in preparation for welding.
- Assist in checking engineering specifications to determine weld locations, weld type, and required reaming, sanding, and grinding operations.
- Perform surface finishing of assemblies by grinding and/or sanding as required.
- Degrease parts and details for assemblies. Assist other employees in the performance of their duties within area(s) of qualification.
- Verify correct quantity and material type; ensure all prior inspection points have been completed and stamped.
- Verify that all engineering and shipping documents have been obtained to perform the necessary work.
- Assist with planning machining procedures and setting up machines and parts.
- Set up and/or verify cutting tools per machine requirements.
- Perform a variety of machining operations, including boring, drilling, milling, tapping, and threading on raw materials to produce machined parts to required tolerances and dimensions per engineering specifications.
- Monitor feeds, spindle speeds, and tool wear during machining; make necessary adjustments to equipment, tools, and/or parts.
- Finish machined parts using various hand tools.
- Verify that parts meet specified tolerances and dimensions per engineering specifications; make further adjustments as needed.
- Maintain existing systems of programs, documents, shop aid tools, and blueprints for applicable machines and equipment.
- Order tools as required for machinery.
- Comply with all environmental, health, and safety policies and procedures, including but not limited to Safety Manual Section 1225.
How to thrive in this role?
- Typically 4 years of diversified machine shop experience, including both conventional (manual) and computerized machining.
- Ability to set up and operate at least 25% of the various machine types used in the machine shop.
- Certifications in welding steel, stainless steel, aluminum, inconel, titanium, and orbital welding, or ability to obtain them within 1 year of hire.
- Typically 4 years of TIG and MIG welding experience or equivalent vocational training with a welding certificate.
- Basic knowledge of reading and interpreting engineering documents, including blueprints and technical drawings.
- Basic ability to calculate dimensional information for machining parts according to specifications.
- Skill in operating and interpreting precision measurement instruments, such as micrometers, calipers, and dial indicators.
- Skill in using simple and compound sine tools.
- Ability to set up and operate various shop equipment, including welders, power hand tools, and grinders.
